Two New Storm OS Leaks!

If you are familiar with OS leaks with the BlackBerry Storm, get ready for another! The two latest leaks for the Storm are:

  • Storm 9500: OS 4.7.106
  • Storm 9530: OS 4.7.103

If you are wanting to download these OS leaks, please note that these are unofficial and are not a complete release of an OS, so you may encounter some bugs here and there. If you cannot tolerate bugs on an OS, I would recommend waiting for the full official release. I have specified the downloads for these OS’ below:

This download is for the 9500

This download is for the 9530

Please leave any feedback with regard to these leaked OS’ here.

Anyone thinking of buying a storm think again. None of the “wow” factors are functioning. This thing crashes several times a day and I have never been able to get the video player to function properly. The touch screen is maddeningly inaccurate-they put the game Word Mole on it just to torture you! I haven’t been able to use 3G yet and I’m in Manhattan. The web browser is slow at best and once again it crashes constantly. The phone randomly switches from handset to speaker and then drops the call altogether. The camera takes the picture and then literally a full second later the shutter sounds. Makes for some very awkward picture taking. Video camera is no better. Take my word atici with the iphone people!

As a “palm treo conversion to the BB Storm” user using Verizon there are several fundamental flaws with the OS. The most important for travelers is the phone does NOT change the clock’s time when entering a NEW time zone. So if you are from NYC and you travel to LA… your time at 9a PST is 12noon! From there the second most important screw-up is the calendar function follows the phone’s time. So if you are again from NYC and have a reminder that you have lunch at noon in LA for 1 hour in advance, your reminder will warn you at 8a in LA rather than 11a PST. Another flaw is the limited fields for the contact manager. So, if you sync with outlook, you will lose multiple cell phones, spouse names, and other detail records. It is a disaster for those who loved the palm treo. Oh, by the way, Verizon is fully aware of this as well as RIM. After 5 hours on both RIM and Verizon tech support, the stunned Verizon support person heard that the Storm was designed for these things to occur. And RIM will not change its system to read the phone’s system time.

Stay away from signing on with Rhapsody because at $14/mth you get all the downloads of music you want, but they have protection so you can’t use them in IPOD. Music really draws down the battery quickly so if you travel by plane, bring your IPOD, as playing music will empty the batter in less than 3 hours!

Another disaster you will find is that once the battery is drawn down to empty, it takes OVER 30 minutes to recharge the battery to ONE BAR so the phone will work. In other words, if you empty the battery on the plane, and you need to make a call when you get off the plane, you will sit near a battery charger at the airport or in the rental car’s batter charger for over 30 minutes BEFORE you can use the phone or navigation.

One reason I bought the phone was to save money with navigation fees when I travel and rent cars. The navigation works well except you cannot use the phone and navigation at the same time; either the phone or the navigation crashes. Secondly, if you are in downtown LA or NYC, you will find the navigation gets lost due to the tall buildings. I literally went around the block several times until I stopped the car and let the navigation catch up to where I was (2 minutes or so) and then drove slowly to the destination.

Another concern is the lack of applications to improve these conditions. The functions are not intuitive and you will find yourself constantly calling Verizon Tech support to solve a mundane but annoying problem, like those I found above. Where are the more expansive applications to business users that blackberry curve uses, but not storm?

When people ask me how I like my storm.. I tell them I love it and hate it. And my 27 yrold son decided to abandon his BB curve for the Iphone. HE LOVES IT! However, every time I call him, the connection to him is awful, and if I get less than 3 drop calls from him, I feel I am lucky. ATT really misrepresents itself with those ads because I rarely have drop calls with Verizon.

I came here to write these items down so that RIM and Verizon will get off their butts and fix these HUGE problems. I read the others about speed and crashes. I was lucky because my phone was an early buy, (before 12/15/08) so that I have talked to others who said they got theirs later and have bugs all over them. So, I read here that there are new beta versions coming. I don’t know if I would download just yet either.

If you buy the phone, plan on lots of training time. It took me over 25 hours over a weekend just to work things out, including sync-ing the phone, finding the flaws and trying to work a solution, and to figure out how to type properly.

There is a setting for time zones. Under options, choose date/time and change the time from blackberry to network. This will allow your berry to update due to time zones. The default setting in blackberry, so if you update your os, make sure that you check this setting.

I am 45 years old and like your son, I chose the storm over the curve. I changed providers and had a curve, which I loved. I have not had the problems with the storm that you have had.

I have service with Verizon and I have good coverage, no dropped calls and none of the crashes that you are talking about.

I see that you went from a Palm Treo to a BB. There is a learning curve with any new device, especially a berry.

Bottom line, if you don’t like it, go get an iphone.

Video has never worked. It bombs and just does not play back.
After it has sat sometimes it comes up with the Verizon screensaver, but then goes dark again. I have to pull the battery for both of these problems.

It sucks batteries like I have never seen. I have to plug it in each night.

Those three problems are the worst for me.
The rest of using the phone, I gotta say I love.
I know these things are fixable and I keep looking for the next OS update to do it.

I waited to get the storm and was so excited when i finally got it, i should have read the reviews before i switched from my dare,it really is very disappointing to have such an exspensive blackberry that does’nt function. i am very supprised verizon has not fixed the storm problem, it is a big risk in business to loose faithful customers. such a big hipe for the storm to suck the way it does. if it was’nt ready to go on the market and function properly, it should not have been released with false advertisments for it to be the best new phone out there.i carry my dare still because my storm battery sucks.it could’nt have been tested for long and not by any woman i know would have said it’s ready for sale. the phone was a big money maker that sucks. verizon should get back their reputation and fix the issues with the storm. all storm owners are searching for the salution trying to stay with the storm but this is my second storm thinking i was the only one having issues with the one i had. this is a big issue that has to be addressed ASAP!!!!! Verizon get your rep back FIX IT….

the storm is awesome but verizon needs to work out the bugs just like any other new phone. just like when the I Phone came out it was a major disapointment but now look its much better the before. All the comments on this page about the storm not working good i have not experenced any of those problems it sounds to me that u dont know what your doing. the storm is awesome and it will only get better.for you haters that have the storm get rid of it if you dont like it the world is not perfect but the storm is just a phone get over it.

i agree with jcouture the storm is awesome and it will only get better soon it will beat the I Phone i have experenced slow internet service, and crashes but what do u expect. I have never had a drop call from verizon wireless. the only down side to VZW is that the plans and service is way expensive, they should come up with a BB plan made special for the storm, so we dont need to pay for each option that they offer. T mobile G1′s internet works way better then the storm and T mobiles plans and addons is way affordable then VZW. all in all the storm is great with email and messageing. if your looking for internet and mms,sms and pic mail then the G1 is 110% better then the storm. the G1 is not good with email you need to convert all your email accounts go GOOGLE.

I upgraded from an OLD Blackberry 8703e to the Storm in March. I had heard some horror stories, but figured it HAD to be better than the ancient phone I was using. Finally I took it in to Verizon and asked to switch to a Curve, I was so frustrated. They told me I had passed my 30 day period. By 10 days. HOWEVER, they made me feel a little better by assuring me that an upgrade would be available within the month of April that would correct approx. 80 issues with the Storm. The upgrade has yet to be released, and we are approaching June.

Issues I have had: My Storm shuts off by itself sometimes 3 times a day. I asked the store about this and they thought I had it set to automatically do this. I did not. Sometimes by the time I realize it’s shut down, I have missed very important calls. It’s not the battery either.

The phone does not like to switch from portrait to landscape viewing.

The keyboard is next to impossible. It doesn’t respond half the time and hitting the correct key takes an act from above. I usually have to push the “reply” button 3-4 times before it responds and the keyboard pops up. Actually, the response time on this phone is slow for everything. Even hitting the “call” button doesn’t work right away… I have had to push it 2-3 times before my phone is like “oh, you want to make a call???” Same thing with the “back” button.

Paging through photos is embarrassing if you are showing them to an iPhone user. They do not “glide” by any means, they sort of trip and stumble.

Using the internet is frustratingly slow, and if you finally get on and want to select a link, good luck.

It switches to camera mode at whim.

The screen will just turn to gray and white dots, like snow on a TV…

It got “stuck” on a call at one time. I hit the disconnect button, didn’t work. I could not hang up. It wouldn’t go back to my home page, nothing. Unfortunately the call was to a computer, and so it was just going to continue until I was able to disconnect myself. Turning it off didn’t work, so I finally had to remove the battery.

Since my phone is company provided, I am required to use a Verizon Blackberry. Several of my co-workers who made this switch warned me, but again, I figured it had to be better than my older Blackberry and really liked the idea of a touch screen. So now I am just stuck with it until they finally release the upgrade, and hopefully they will have gotten it right.

Re: Blackberry Storm. I set a password for my phone to safeguard my information. approximately one out of 8 attempted logons fail because the the device won’t let me key in my password. The keyboard appears but the phone won’t let me input any data. Didn’t anyone test this device prior to placing it on the market? My experience with the phone is not one of delight, most of the discoveries come in the form of some new software disaster, frozen screens, upgrades that make things worse or sudden unexplained shutdowns. This by the way is my third phone! By now my provider, Verizon, is aware of the numerous complaints and problems with this phone. Neither RIM or Verizon has made any effort to compensate the consumer. They do not even appear to want to acknowledge that their is a problem.
